Tackling the Kitchen

The Kitchen is the heart of the home. For this reason, there is a lot of symbolism attached to this area. In Feng Shui, water represents abundance and money. We want to make sure that the dishwasher and faucet in the kitchen are all working properly with no leaks. A leak could mean money is leaving the home. Likewise, the stove brings fire and nourishment to our families. A broken stove can mean broken finances. We want to make sure that all things in our home are working properly, especially the stove and kitchen sink.

Organization

When de-cluttering the kitchen, as with any other room in your home, we want to take everything out of the cabinets and drawers to take inventory on what we have and whether we still love and use it. I would recommend getting rid of glassware or dinnerware that is chipped or broken – as that brings broken energy into our home.

When putting items back in drawers and cabinets, we want to make sure that items we use daily are closer to the kitchen work triangle – that is the area created between the fridge, stove, and sink. The contents of our drawers and cabinets should be organized in such a way that likes go with likes. All glasses together, all dinnerware together, etc.

Finally, we want to try to keep the countertops as clear as we possibly can. This way it will be much cleaner to use and will also feel lighter visually.

Positioning

As with the bed, we want to be in “Command position” when in the kitchen. As most of the cooking is done over the stove, it is ideal to have the stove in the center island. The “command position” means that you are facing the direction that people will be approaching you in that space. The essence of this feng shui position is about being the commander of your own energy so that you do your best in any situation and aren’t startled when someone is coming towards you. If this is not possible in your current layout, place a reflective object above the stove (ie. A mirror) so that you are always able to see behind you.

Décor

We want to bring rounded edges to the kitchen. That means no knives or pointy objects out in the open. Take a closer look at artwork displayed in and around the kitchen to make sure that all imagery represents health and abundance.

Likewise, since there is a lot of fire and water already in this space, try offsetting this energy by introducing neutral colors or shades of green. These can be introduced through tea towels, vases, or decorative bowls.

Lastly, I want to pay particular attention to the fridge, as a lot of people try to decorate it with photos of family and friends. While this is a nice tradition, by adding visual stimulus, you are actually calling your attention to the fridge. This may cause excess consumption of food because by adding photos or invitations, you are forced to turn in it’s direction and more likely to mindlessly consume its contents. It is ok to put up 1-3 objects but try to keep it to a minimum.
